Mr. Bush helpt mij
Ik weet niet of jullie van de Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 hebben gehoord.
Een poging van President Bush en het Congres om de Amerikaanse economie een stimulans te geven en en eventuele recessie tegen te houden. (Dit jaar worden er verkiezingen gehouden, voor het geval je dat nogniet wist. Om een idee te geven hoe snel dat gegaan is: op 7 februariwerd dit wetsvoorstel aangenomen door zowel de Senaat als het Huis vanAfgevaardigden. Op 13 februari werd het ondertekend door de President!)
Wat het inhoudt is dat elke belastingbetaler maximaal $600,00 van de overheid krijgt, gratis en voor niks.
De bedoeling is dat dit geld uitgegeven wordt, waardoor de economie een stimulans krijgt.
Ik heb dit idee altijd niks gevonden. Het is te weinig, te laat, pakt de echte problemen niet aan, en stimuleert mensen om alleen maar meer te consumeren.
Tot gisteren,toen ik een brief van de IRS kreeg: ik heb ook recht op deze teruggaaf.
Nu mag ik nadenken over wat ik met dit geld ga doen.
Tien procent naar de kerk?

NPR had a really interesting piece on this. There is so much to consider ethically.
1. One of the main reasons the economy is in this crisis is because American’s do not know how to stay out of debt. There is always too much credit card debt and now this housing crisis because people loaned money they didn’t have and they chose loans that were not wise. So, will it solve one of the roots of the problem if people who obviously make poor choices about money are given more money to spend?
2. I made good choices about my loan. Why should my tax dollars go to bailing out my neighbor who made poor choices?
But the funniest part of the piece was when someone stated how getting this kind of stimulus feels so condescending. The money being given back to me was my money in the first place and now I am supposed to be so thankful to the government for giving it back to me – and just $600.00 – come on, that’s just silly. The irony is that in this current economy $600.00 isn’t going to get our family much of anything.
